Two alloys dominate the world of aluminum extrusion: 6063 and 6061. Both belong to the 6xxx family (magnesium and silicon) and both are extrudable, weldable and corrosion-resistant. But they are not interchangeable. This guide breaks down the differences so you can specify the right material.
The short answer
- Choose 6063 when the priority is aesthetics, formability and surface finish for anodizing or powder coating — typical in architectural applications.
- Choose 6061 when the priority is higher strength and mechanical performance with moderate formability — typical in structural, defense and industrial applications.
Strength comparison
The most important difference is strength. In the T6 temper:
| Property | 6063 (T6/T66) | 6061 (T6) |
|---|---|---|
| Ultimate tensile strength | ~ 170–250 MPa | ~ 290–310 MPa |
| Yield strength | ~ 140–200 MPa | ~ 240–275 MPa |
| Elongation | ~ 8–12% | ~ 8–17% |
| Typical uses | Architectural, trim, decorative | Structural, high-load, machining |
The table is indicative; exact figures depend on profile geometry and tempering. If your part carries significant structural load, 6061 is the safer choice.
Anodizing and finish quality
6063 is engineered for cosmetic applications. It anodizes to a more uniform, brighter and defect-free finish and is the default for architectural and interior visible profiles. 6061, containing slightly higher alloy additions, can develop a less consistent finish and is usually chosen where strength matters more than appearance. Note that anodizing and powder coating are carried out by qualified third-party finishing vendors; Salco performs mechanical buffing in-house and coordinates the approved coating partner for you.
Weldability and machinability
Both alloys weld well with standard MIG/TIG methods. For machining (drilling, milling, tapping), 6061 is preferred because its higher strength and silicon content produce cleaner cuts.
Cost and availability
6063 is generally cheaper and more readily available outside highly engineered programs, because the majority of extruded profiles worldwide — curtain walls, frames, rails — are produced in 6063. 6061 costs a little more but is worth it for structural duties.
How Salco helps you choose
As an aluminum extrusion manufacturer in India, Salco Extrusions draws on decades of alloy knowledge to recommend the optimum grade for your design. The full 6xxx family — including 6060, 6082 and 6063 variants — can be cast, extruded and heat-treated in-house, so switching between grades rarely affects delivery timelines.
Rather than guess, send your profile drawing to us with a description of the load, environment and finish requirements, and our contact team will confirm the right alloy, temper and surface treatment for your parts.
