A custom aluminum profile is only as good as the die that shapes it. The die determines the achievable wall thickness, tolerances, surface condition and speed of extrusion — and it is also where most of the cost is locked in. Buying from a manufacturer with in-house die design and tooling changes the economics of your project.
Why die design matters
The open hole in a die has to control where the aluminum flows, how fast it fills the section, and where the seams form. A poorly designed die produces:
- distorted or twisted sections,
- inconsistent wall thickness,
- surface tearing or die lines,
- slow press speeds that inflate the unit cost.
By contrast, a well-designed die — shaped with the right balance of bearing length, feed pockets and port arrangement — runs fast, lasts longer and repeats exactly.
In-house tooling: what it means for you
When die design, die steel machining and die correction happen in one facility, three things improve:
- Faster lead times. A new die can realistically be designed, manufactured and tested in days to a couple of weeks rather than months.
- Lower cost per part. Multiple correction loops are eliminated, and die life is maximised because the designer knows exactly how the press will run the tool.
- Better dimensional fidelity. Designers iterate against the physical tool rather than relying on third-party hand-offs.
Where die design pays off most
- Hollow and semi-hollow profiles — where weld seams must be placed away from critical faces.
- High-fin-density heat sinks — thin fins need very controlled metal flow to avoid tearing. See our electrical & electronics capabilities.
- Architectural sections — visible faces require flawless surfaces and tight twist control. Explore architectural & custom parts.
- Precision small parts — for printing blankets and V-bars, micro-tolerances are everything.
The Salco approach
Salco Extrusions has operated a full CAD/CAM tool room since inception. Our engineers review your blueprints, advise on die feasibility and profile cost, then manufacture and prove the die internally on our own presses — typically the 700T, 1100T and 1250T machines at our Tarapur MIDC plant.
This model lets Indian manufacturers bring in custom profiles at competitive prices without sacrificing quality. To get a die feasibility review or a quote, contact the Salco team with your profile drawing — we will confirm tonnage, alloy and pricing before you commit.
